Homeopathy for anxiety is not a new concept. In fact, people have been using various herbs and plants to treat the symptoms of panic and anxiety for centuries. The healing nature of these plants has been well recorded and they provide a safe, gentle alternative to more traditional medications. For individuals who want to ease anxiety and avoid the possibility of serious side effects, natural treatments are the obvious answer.

Anxiety is caused by the malfunction of neurotransmitters within the brain. The resulting symptoms can include pervasive feelings of dread and uneasiness and physical conditions including sweaty palms and increased heart rate. In most cases, anti-depressants or benzodiazepines will be prescribed to help ease symptoms, but these treatments are not without their drawbacks, primarily potentially damaging side effects. Anxiety homeopathy offers a much more effective form of treatment.

Because it focuses on the body as a whole and specifically targets the physiological condition which causes anxiety, homeopathy for anxiety is considered particularly effective. The principle is based on easing symptoms by correcting imbalances within the brain. This can improve overall health and increase the body’s ability to heal itself for long term results.

Dana Ullman has conducted a very thorough review of homeopathic research trials. He worked with a professor at the Medical University of Vienna and together they wrote this very review of research conducted on homeopathy and respiratory allergies. They considered numerous studies published in the Lancet and BMJ.

People keep claiming that there is little or no research in homeopathy, but this is just not true!

A Review of Homeopathic Research in the Treatment of Respiratory Allergies

Dana is such a respected leader in the field, and I have been following his work for many years. Many thanks to him for this work.

Dana’s bio: Thanks to Huffington Post: Dana Ullman

Dana Ullman, M.P.H. is widely recognized as the foremost spokesperson for homeopathic medicine in the U.S. He has authored nine books, including his newest book, The Homeopathic Revolution: Why Famous People and Cultural Heroes Choose Homeopathy (North Atlantic Books/Random House, 2007), which includes a Foreword by the Physician to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He has also written Homeopathic Medicines for Children and Infants (Jeremy Tarcher/Putnam, 1992) and the best-selling Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicines (Jeremy Tarcher/Putnam, revised 2004) that is America’s most popular guidebook to using homeopathic medicines at home.

Dana Ullman has written extensively on homeopathic research in an ebook entitled Homeopathic Family Medicine: Evidence Based Nanopharmacology, which describes and references 200+ clinical trials testing homeopathic medicines. Dana’s resource center, Homeopathic Educational Services (www.homeopathic.com) is a leading source for homeopathic books, medicines, home medicine kits, software, and courses.

Dana Ullman has also written chapters on homeopathic medicine for several leading medical textbooks for practicing physicians, including in Integrative Oncology (edited by Andrew Weil, and Donald Abrams, Oxford University Press, 2009), Weiner’s Pain Management: A Practical Guide for Clinicians (edited by M.V. Boswell and B.E. Cole, Taylor and Francis, 2006), and Complementary and Alternative Veterinary Medicine: Principles and Practice (edited by A.M. Schoen, and S.G. Wynn, Mosby, 1998).

Dana Ullman co-taught a ten-week course on homeopathy at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine from 1993 to 1995 and again in 1998. He also has served or been asked to serve as a consultant or on the advisory board to alternative medicine institutes at Harvard, Columbia, University of Arizona, and University of Alaska schools of medicine. Dr. Andrew Weil’s Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona asked Dana to develop their curriculum in homeopathy for their physician associate fellows.

Dana Ullman has written over 200 published articles in a variety of respected publications, including eCAM (published by Oxford University Press), Western Journal of Medicine, The FASEB Journal, Social Policy, The Futurist, Utne Reader, California Living (the Sunday magazine to the S.F. Chronicle and S.F. Examiner), as well as numerous health care and homeopathic journals. Besides authoring many books and articles, Dana has served as publisher of 35 major texts in homeopathy by other authors.

Dana Ullman has been particularly effective in working with major institutions and getting them to change their attitudes and policies towards natural health care. He has organized successful conferences that were sponsored by the federal Department of Health & Human Services (“Holistic Health: Policies in Action,” May, 1980) and U.C. Berkeley (“Conceptualizing Energy Medicine,” March, 1981). He authored the San Francisco Foundation’s Health Report, which changed the funding priorities of this major philanthropic institution. He consulted on a research project sponsored by the California medical board that ultimately recommended many of his proposals. He has served as a consultant to the World Health Organization in 1993. He attended the Institute of Medicine’s Summit on Integrative Medicine in 2009, and he authored a report on it for Oxford University Press’ journal, eCAM.

Dana Ullman graduated from U.C. Berkeley’s School of Public Health (1978). U.C. Berkeley’s alumni magazine featured him in an extensive interview in 1999.

I am preparing this book for publication- here is an excerpt that I hope will help folks with CFS. I know how awful it is- how debilitating. I struggled with it for 7 years, and it was a nosode of Coxsackie B4 9a flu virus) which was a complete cure.

The book will be available within the month.

Excerpt from: “The Homeopathic Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.”

Chapter 7:

If one has employed a Voll, Vega or even Kinesiological screening, a viral match may be found, the most common in CFS being Cytomegalo, Coxsackie B1-B6 (B influenza), Mononucleosis (Glandular fever), Human Herpes virus Type 6 (HHV6), or Epstein Barr.  A nosode of the virus (if found) should be prescribed at this time, for example, 30c to be taken every three days for three weeks. The understanding of past homeopathic practitioners has been to employ the 30c potency of nosodes only once in 6 months, but in this author’s experience, this is simply not enough. I began my practice in this manner, and found that the patient returned in two to three weeks testing just as strongly for the virus. Yet when he took the remedy at frequent intervals for several weeks, the symptoms, and the test match disappeared in three to four weeks.  It is always possible that one may have to instruct the patient to take a short break in this treatment, to allow some intermediary detoxification to take place. There have been many occasions where a 200c of the nosode tested, possibly indicating that the person has harbored the virus, or the viral memory, for a longer period of time. In this case a dose once a week for three weeks has been effective, with doses of the 30c potency, as well, every two to three days, depending on the level of illness of the patient and his or her sensitivity to remedies.

It is essential, however, to employ drainage support, as described above, during this nosode work. Without it the patient can experience a severe aggravation of his symptoms. If the patient is severely compromised and weak, it is a good idea to prescribe the drainage remedies for approximately a week or even longer, with Vitamin C and lots of pure water, before taking of the first dose of the nosode remedy. In these weakened individuals it is definitely safer and easier on the patient to start with a 30c of the nosode, even though the 200c may test.

Often, at this time, a single constitutional remedy will test, or be chosen according to standard homeopathic practice. If this is the case, one can also prescribe a 30c to be taken every other day, with the proviso that the vital force is strong enough (at least 80 on the Dermatron/RM10 Voll machine.) If the vital force is weakened, even this middle potency can cause an aggravation, an undesirable reaction in a compromised individual. If there is any doubt, it is preferable to wait until gentle drainage and nosode work has been completed, sometimes as little as three to four weeks, but often longer. Each patient is different, and will recover at a different speed. A patient whose vital force is depleted, (hand-to-hand reading is well below the ideal 84) is in a deeper, more chronic, and more pathological phase of disease.

TRIP TIPS

How many of us look forward to a vacation for months, only to have some sort of calamity occur? Besides the obvious jet lag, insect bites, sunburn, and changes in water and eating habits, there are the more serious threats of food poisoning, or the flu. All those foreign viruses and bacteria just waiting to ruin your trip! Here are some easy tips to make your vacation healthier and happier.

Take air travel. When I moved here from the U.K., I became an expert in the art of flying, enduring 22 return trips from London in 24 months. For long distances, consider adjusting a bit to the time difference of your destination. I always try to get up half an hour earlier each morning starting two weeks before a London flight. It’s a bit anti-social, especially when someone calls and you’re in bed at 8:30 P.M., but it definitely works. I can adapt to at least 3 hours of the 5-hour time difference here on the East Coat, before I even leave! Then, to ensure sleep on the plane, always use little foam earplugs (try pharmacies, hardware stores, or gun stores), and an eye mask- nothing disturbs me! A couple of Calms Forte or herbal Valerian, and I’m out. Or take a Dramamine tablet to ensure you sleep.

Also, a wonderful travel idea is to try a foam neck brace from a surgical supply. It stops your head lolling about. Get the large size, so that your head is completely supported.  I find them much better than those badly designed little neck pillows. And other passengers and crew are particularly nice to you!

Drink lots of good water, not alcohol or coffee on the plane, as they are dehydrating. Eat lightly, as you don’t want your body to use up its energy digesting a full stomach of food. Also the cabin air is extremely dry, and this can play havoc with the mucus membranes of your sinuses, leaving them vulnerable to possible circulating viruses from all the people in an enclosed space. Use a saline nasal spray (from any drugstore) as often as you remember, and suck on chewable Ester C through the flight- this will also help to protect you.

Try not to touch your face, especially your eyes, with your hands while you travel. This is an especially useful tip, as everything you touch has been recently touched by other hands, and the cold and flu germs are very contagious. To that end, take a little package of wipes, to clean your hands as often as possible.

At your destination, try not to sleep till nighttime if possible. At bedtime, take 2 mgs of melatonin, available at health food stores. Melatonin is secreted from the pineal gland in your brain when it is time for sleep. In short, it can reset your time clock- personally I find it amazing. Since I’ve started using it I’ve had next to no jet lag.

Digestive disturbances are a common hassle for travelers. Some people get constipated almost the minute they leave home. Take magnesium capsules with you, and take 500 mg a day for the first few days of your trip. Also there are the herbs such as Cascara Sagrada or Senna to create a gentle laxative, plus, be sure to drink plenty of water.

A bigger problem is the bacterial threat, usually caused by E. Coli, or Salmonella, the bacterias that cause dysentery, or even parasites such as the common giardia. Everyone knows to drink only bottled water, avoid ice cubes, etc., but the most important advice is to take large amounts of a good quality probiotic product from Natren, Natrol, Metagenics, Twin Labs, etc. These beneficial bifidobacteria can help protect you from attacks by unfriendly bacterias. A friend of mine recently survived a trip through the depths of India unscathed, while her traveling companions dropped one by one with severe “Montezuma’s Revenge”, known in the UK as “Delhi Belly”. They spent much of their vacation running for bathrooms. All she did was take three or four capsules of acidophilus 4 times a day. However, if you do suffer a disturbance, which does not clear up quickly, see a good practitioner when you get home, especially if diarrhea, gas, or bloating remain, or if you lose weight. I’m working now with a client who fell into a river in Thailand. Parasites can be nasty and tenacious, so don’t wait around.

Finally, consider assembling a small first aid travel kit of herbals and homeopathics to carry with you. Besides the items I discussed above, consider these:

–Traumeel from Heel for shock, bruises, injuries
–Calendula tincture for small skin wounds
–Apis 6x for insect bites
–Alpha CF to ward off colds
–Oscillococcinum by Boiron to fight flu
–Gastricumeel by Heel for stomach aches or indigestion
–Cocculus Composition by Heel for travel sickness (really great for kids)
–chewable calcium and magnesium tablets for heartburn
–And of course the indispensable Vitamin C adn Vitamin D to protect your immune system!

Also, remember to carry your kit to be hand checked by the airline- x-rays can wipe out your homeopathics.

Knowing you have some insurance in the form of this health kit, you can relax and have a wonderful time!

I found this great article this morning- thanks to Dr. Shreya: available here : http://www.drshreya.com/html/homeopathy-why-popular.html

The Secret Behind Popularity of Homeopathy!

If you ask for a mode of therapy that is fast becoming popular all over the world, homeopathy will be the answer! It is the therapeutic system of medicine that is around since more than 200 years ago now and still sticking to same old principles, it is advancing in its field of treating intractable diseases. The basic reason behind this popularity is obviously the fact that “it works!”

Here is the list of factors those added glitter to homeopathic mode of treatment:

(1) Safety: In the mess of overwhelming medicinal dosages leading to excruciating side effects, homeopathy is believed as a weapon that kills disease without killing the person! Utmost safety due to highly minute doses those are potentized forms of different herbs and other sources is the plus of homeopathy. No wonder we see people around who read homeopathic literature and treat themselves with homeopathy and many times find better relief for their problems. However this is true only of certain acute conditions and not chronic ones. Lot more things need to be understood for treating chronic diseases and only a qualified homeopath can do this.

(2) Ability to treat chronic illnesses: The homeopathic medicines are capable of treating cases like intractable asthma, long standing psoriasis, and recurrent kidney stones. The diseases where modern medicine at times says “no”, homeopathy’s sphere of action begins. In many illnesses homeopathy is said to replace surgeon’s knife. Even incurable arthritis is treated with homeopathic medicines without inflicting any harm upon patients.

(3) Easy to take: Available in pill, powder, or liquid form, homeopathic medicines are easy to take for sure. Chewing the pills is a pleasurable experience for kids. That’s the reason why kids enjoy visiting homeopathic doctors and never fret questioning.

(4) Enhance bodily immunity: Instead of suppressing existing disease in question. Homeopathy by its eternal principle of “like cures like” enhances bodily immunity and enables the body to repel the disease in its entirety. That’s the reason homeopathy is believed to be extremely effective even in dealing with preventive aspects of infectious diseases in epidemics like swine flu. It is recommended by homeopathic experts that instead of digging the well when it is too late, it is better to opt for homeopathy when you sense the impending attack so that herd immunity can be built.

(5) Veterinary Use: Homeopathic medicines have been found useful for dogs, cats, and animals alike. Not only veterinary but homeopathic medicines are also found useful for plant diseases. Due to this all-round safe use, homeopathic medicines have grown popular by leaps and bounds in recent years.

People are turning more and more frequently to alternative therapies for help with all kinds of health problems. The growing distrust and rising cost of orthodox medicine and pharmaceutical drugs, coupled with the increasing media coverage of successful alternative interventions, has sent people to their health food stores to investigate other options. Self treatment is at an all time high, with the availability of information given us by the internet. Homeopathic remedies are more and mover commonly found in customers’ medicine cabinets.

Simple, acute complaints that are self limiting, often respond well to over the counter homeopathic remedies, such as coughs, colds, period pains, headaches, and indigestion. A UK survey found that the top three conditions for which customers were buying OTC homeopathics were respiratory complaints, bruises and injuries, and mental conditions such as depression and/or anxiety. The people surveyed went on to report that they felt homeopathy was effective in relieving these complaints.

In the USA the best selling OTC homeopathic products are those for allergies, colds, children’s ear infections, and pain relief, such as for headaches. People realize now that homeopathic remedies are harmless- they either work really well, it they are correct for person taking them, or they do not. There are no side effects. There are also no drug interactions to worry about. 25% of those surveys reported that they took their homeopathic remedies at the same time that they took prescription drugs
As customers become more and more informed and savvy with regard to homeopathics, they are reaching for Aconite, Belladonna, Chamomilla and Pulsatilla for their child’s ear infection, instead of the endless round of antibiotics and possible ear tubes!

A good homeopathic resource link: http://www.abchomeopathy.com/ This site has a good forum, and software to help you decide what remedy you might need. Plus it has lots of information about individual remedies.

There is a very good community, growing, about Homeopathy and supporting its use.

Great articles and education on homeopathy: http://www.homeopathic.com/articles/view,134

Professor Luc Montagnier,  a French virologist and 2008 Nobel Prize Winner, has been rigorously investigating homeopath remedies. With his team of researchers, he has conclusively shown that homeopathically prepared substances give off electromagnetic waves, which create an effect in the body when ingested.

For more details, go to http://www.homeopathic.com/articles/view,134. Dana Ullmann has written a wonderful report of this exciting news!

I had an interesting conversation with a friend this holiday weekend. Jim asked me what compels someone to book time with me with regard to their health. I thought about it. I considered the fact that many come to me via word-of-mouth referral- having helped someone others want to see if I can help them.

I considered the amount of training and experience I have, and the wonderful system of German combination homeopathy and classical single remedies, with nutritional guidance, all blended into a system that really works for my clients.

But then I answered him: “Because I really care, and my clients know it. They can feel it.”

And that is the difference. Unfortunately, orthodox medicine trains its doctors, and nurses to a lesser degree, to cut off their emotions as they work with patients. I simply can not and do not choose to do this. I feel such great compassion for the people who ask me for help. Because I really feel for them, I go the extra mile and do whatever it takes to try to improve their quality of health.

This of course means more time. TIME- you know, the thing you just never get in the medical world? lol I can’t work with very many people at once, as I give so much time to each person.

So, alternative practitioners are not wealthy, but we are satisfied, rewarded human beings!

I finished up my explanation to Jim by saying, “I am working my way to heaven, one person at a time.”

It feels very good to me!

Happy New Year to you all!

What is Homeopathy?

By Diane Solomon DHM DipI.O.N www.solomonhealing.com

Homeopathic philosophy is very different to that of orthodox medicine as we know it. The medical world maintains an accent on finding a “single bullet’ to attack any invader in the body. A good example is an antibiotic, which acts like a specific “hammer,” targeting and killing specific bacteria. The body’s own immune system does not take part in the fight, but is overridden by the antibiotic itself. In fact, the immune system is suppressed during the duration of the course of antibiotic treatment.

Current medical opinion takes the views that symptoms are a direct manifestation of the illness and therefore doctors treat the ailment by suppressing the symptoms. Homeopathy, by contrast, sees the symptoms as the body’s reaction against the illness as it attempts to overcome it, and seeks to stimulate, not suppress this reaction. It acts with the body, to raise its own defenses to battle the problem. Therefore, the immune system takes part in the fight, and the body is stronger for it.

Homeopathic remedies appear to trigger a healing process in the body by stimulating the body’s natural forces of recovery. It is a natural medicinal science that uses very small doses of plant, animal, or mineral substances to stimulate the body’s innate healing ability. Homeopathy views most symptoms as efforts by the body to re-establish homeostasis and therefore seeks to support the body’s inherent efforts to heal itself

Homeopathy uses specially prepared, infinitesimal doses of substances that, in larger quantities, would cause the very symptoms they are trying to address. This basic principle has been known since the time of the ancient Greeks. Derived from the Greek word “Homoios’ meaning “like,” homeopathy is the practice of treating “like with like.” Here’s an example. When cutting onions for cooking, your eyes itch and run, your nose runs, and you sneeze. Onions made into a homeopathic remedy, known as Allium Cepa, can be very effective in reducing the symptoms of runny nose, itching eyes, and sneezing that accompany a cold or allergies. Another example is Poison Ivy (Rhus Tox). In homeopathic doses, Rhus Tox is a valuable remedy for certain skin rashes since in its undiluted state it causes them. Therefore “like cures like.” This principle is known as the “law of similars”, and has been used throughout history. Hippocrates himself wrote, “Through the like, disease is produced, and through the application of like it is cured.”

A German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, developed homeopathy in the early 1800’s. A respected physician and chemist, he was nevertheless appalled by the medical practices of his day, such as bleeding, and the use of toxic substances such as arsenic and mercury. He sought a method of healing which would be safe, effective, and gentle. At that time the main treatment for malaria was quinine from cinchona bark. He decided to take quinine himself as an experiment. Imagine his astonishment when he discovered that taking small regular doses of cinchona bark produced symptoms very similar to those of malaria! But when given to a patient suffering from malaria, the symptoms were alleviated, and the patient would recover.

He also tested belladonna, mercury, arsenic and silver nitrate, common poisons and substances used in medical practice at the time, to see what their effects would be on healthy people. Once again he found that small, dilute doses of these substances would induce symptoms similar to the illnesses for which they were being used. Many similar experiments over many years led Hahnemann to the conclusion that remedies obtained from animal, vegetable, and mineral sources were just as effective in extreme dilutions. He worked to establish the smallest effective dose, realizing that his was the best way to avoid side effects. In doing this he unexpectedly discovered that the more a remedy is diluted, the more effective it becomes.

Homeopathic medicines are manufactured through a scientific pharmacological procedure called “potentization”. This is a process of diluting and shaking and further diluting and shaking. The most commonly used dilution in the United States is the decimal or “x” potency. A 1x potency is a concentration of 1/10th, 2x is 1/100th, 3x is 1/1000th etc. To create a common potency, a 6x, one would start by making a 1x. This is done by mixing ten drops of the original plant or mineral substance with 90 drops of water and alcohol, then shaking hard, or hitting against a surface such as a book, thirty to fifty times. This is known as dilution and succussion. For a 2x, you simply take ten drops of the 1x, and, just as you did before, mix with 90 drops of alcohol and water, and succuss. Continue with the 3x, 4x, 5x, until you create a 6x.

No one can yet satisfactorily explain how homeopathic doses work. One theory is that succussion creates an electrochemical pattern somewhat akin to a holographic memory which is stored in the dilutant and then spreads through the body’s water. Another theory suggests that the dilution-succussion process creates an electro-magnetic field. Recent work by physicists using nuclear resonance imaging has ascertained that there is a different structure and shape to the molecules of a homeopathic remedy and those of simple water and alcohol. This has gone some way to stopping the claim that “there’s nothing in them” which has plagued homeopathy to date. Also, there have been more and more careful studies recently which help to confirm the effectiveness of homeopathy. In any case, with modern physics constantly discovering smaller and smaller particles and their effects, and with the discovery that insects can detect and act on pheromones in the air to one part per million, the idea of an infinitesimal dose having an effect on the body no longer seems impossible.

Because they are so greatly diluted, homeopathic remedies are not harmful. They are safe, non-toxic and non-addictive. Homeopathic remedies, like all medicines, are regulated by the FDA. Because they are so extremely dilute and are free from side effects, they are completely safe for the patient. Homeopathic remedies will not interfere or react with other medications the patient may be taking.

Homeopathic remedies come in various forms, usually drops (water and alcohol), tablets, and pellets. They are best absorbed under the tongue, well away from food and drink. While taking remedies it is best to avoid caffeine, mint, menthol, camphor, and cortisone, as these substances will often antidote the remedies or lessen their effect in the body. The remedies must be stored away from magnets, cell phones, microwave ovens, heat over 150 degrees Fahrenheit, and strong smelling substances such as camphor and eucalyptus.

Having taken the homeopathic dose recommended by the practitioner, it is sometimes possible that the patient will experience a slight aggravation of his symptoms before improvement begins. This is a confirmation that the correct remedy has been chosen, and is therefore not a negative reaction. However, it is also common for a level of relief to take place without this aggravation, and is the ideal goal of the homeopathic practitioner. Less is always better than more, when it comes to homeopathy, and when a reaction has taken place, it is usual to stop the remedy. For simple, acute conditions, it is fine to try homeopathic remedies on your own, but is best to work with a practitioner if you are dealing with more complex health issues, and chronic complaints.

The deepest work in homeopathy is achieved through what is known as “miasmatic” treatment. A “miasm” is a predisposition to an inherited disease pattern, which can produce a tendency towards a variety of conditions. Hahnemann found several miasms that can be transmitted from one generation to another. One leads to disorders such as diabetes, insomnia, depression, alcoholism, osteoporosis, heart disease. Another leads to tendencies towards fibroids, cysts, tumors, asthma, allergies, and even manic depression.. A third leads to eczema, psoriasis, one-sided migraines, anxiety. Miasms exist on very high vibrational levels, therefore miasmic treatment generally consists of higher and higher potencies, which go deeper and deeper into the systems to erase more and more of the miasmatic shadow, potentially even the person’s DNA.
