Big uprising is on the way against genetically modified foods, says Supermarket News

In December of ’09, Supermarket News, a trade publication for conventional food execs and retailer, states, “The coming year promises to bring about a greater, more pervasive awareness” of the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our food supply, wrote Group Editor Robert Vosburgh. He credits two recent launches with “the potential to spark a new round of concern among shoppers who are today much more attuned to the ways their food is produced.
As it is, 53% of Americans state that they would avoid GMOs if they were labeled. Genetically modified foods do not have any benefits to consumers, who are aware of this. What people may not realize is that the most commonly genetically modified, which include corn, soy, canola and sugar beets, are gene-spliced to be able to tolerate poisonous herbicides, or even create and produce poisonous insecticides.

Sales are up for non-genetically modified food. Big retailers such as Whole Foods and Trader Joes have been leading the way- their consumers are insisting on non GMO food. This kind of demand has lead to the removal of all GM ingredients in Japan and Europe, and it seems likely the US food system will be forced to follow.

Can’t be too soon, for me.

Alcohol abuse is a pattern of problem drinking that results in health consequences, social, problems, or both. However, alcohol dependence, or alcoholism, refers to a disease that is characterized by abnormal alcohol-seeking behavior that leads to impaired control over drinking.

Short-term effects of alcohol use include:

* Distorted vision, hearing, and coordination
* Altered perceptions and emotions
* Impaired judgment
* Bad breath
* Hangovers

Long Term Effects:

Some problems, like those mentioned above, can occur after drinking over a relatively short period of time. But other problems–such as liver disease, heart disease, certain forms of cancer, and pancreatitis–often develop more gradually and may become evident only after long-term heavy drinking. Women may develop alcohol-related health problems after consuming less alcohol than men do over a shorter period of time. Because alcohol affects many organs in the body, long-term heavy drinking puts you at risk for developing serious health problems, some of which are described below.

Stages of alcohol-induces liver damage

Alcohol-related liver disease. Some drinkers develop alcoholic hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, as a result of long-term heavy drinking. Its symptoms include fever, jaundice and abdominal pain. Alcoholic hepatitis can cause death if drinking continues. If drinking stops, this condition often is reversible.

About 10 to 20 percent of heavy drinkers develop alcoholic cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver. Alcoholic cirrhosis can cause death if drinking continues. Although cirrhosis is not reversible, if drinking stops, one’s chances of survival improve considerably. Those with cirrhosis often feel better, and the functioning of their liver may improve, if they stop drinking. Although liver transplantation may be needed as a last resort, many people with cirrhosis who abstain from alcohol may never need liver transplantation. In addition, treatment for the complications of cirrhosis is available.

Heart disease. Moderate drinking can have beneficial effects on the heart, especially among those at greatest risk for heart attacks, such as men over the age of 45 and women after menopause. But long-term heavy drinking increases the risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some kinds of stroke.

Cancer. Long-term heavy drinking increases the risk of developing certain forms of cancer, especially cancer of the esophagus, mouth, throat, and voice box. Women are at slightly increased risk of developing breast cancer if they drink two or more drinks per day. Drinking may also increase the risk for developing cancer of the colon and rectum.

Pancreatic. The pancreas helps to regulate the body’s blood sugar levels by producing insulin. The pancreas also has a role in digesting the food we eat. Long-term heavy drinking can lead to pancreatic, or inflammation of the pancreas. This condition is associated with severe abdominal pain and weight loss and can be fatal.

Good article from Natural News. The HPV virus does not cause cervical cancer, and the HPV vaccine, which has been pushed on us for years now, may even cause precancerous cells! Check it out…

http://ow.ly/137OO

(NaturalNews) “For the last several years, HPV vaccines have been marketed to the public and mandated in compulsory injections for young girls in several states based on the idea that they prevent cervical cancer. Now, NaturalNews has obtained documents from the FDA and other sources (see below) which reveal that the FDA has been well aware for several years that Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has no direct link to cervical cancer.

NaturalNews has also learned that HPV vaccines have been proven to be flatly worthless in clearing the HPV virus from women who have already been exposed to HPV (which includes most sexually active women), calling into question the scientific justification of mandatory “vaccinate everyone” policies.

Furthermore, this story reveals evidence that the vaccine currently being administered for HPV — Gardasil — may increase the risk of precancerous cervical lesions by an alarming 44.6 percent in some women. The vaccine, it turns out, may be far more dangerous to the health of women than doing nothing at all.”

Thanks, Natural News!

Why does an alkaline-forming diet matter?

It is fairly common knowledge (at least among nutritionists and health nuts) that it is important to eat enough alkaline forming foods in your diet. Why? The answer is that our bodies need to be kept slightly alkaline for complete health. And you can ensure this with your choice of foods every day.

The problem is, so many of our foods are acid-forming in the body! The list is long: coffee, sugar, sweetened fruit juices, processed snacks high in corn syrup, dairy products, soft drinks, meats, eggs, grains…. I hear you saying “that is all the stuff I eat!” Add to this the fact that most pharmaceutical drugs are acid forming, as are artificial chemicals such as NutraSweet.

Our blood pH should be slightly alkaline, or above 7.0 An acidic pH is caused by many factors besides our food choices: stress, toxins, immune reactions, and/or immune reactions- basically all the things we have to deal with every day! So our diet becomes even more important. If the body is dealing with acidity, it will compensate, but it does so by using alkaline minerals.. If there are not enough of these coming into the body via the diet, the blood will start to move towards acidity, and the body then grabs minerals from the bone. Perhaps this explains some of the high level of osteopenia and osteoporosis in our society’s women.

Ideally, to maintain good blood pH, your diet should consist of 60% alkaline-forming foods and 40% acid forming foods. If you are ill, and needing to recover health, this needs to be skewed even further, ideally 80% alkaline-forming and 20% acid-forming foods.

So what are the alkaline forming foods? Alkaline-forming foods are green vegetables, legumes such as peas, beans lentils, most fruit, and seeds and nuts (raw). Some really tasty individual foods are pumpkin seeds, cabbage, grapefruit, potatoes, and wild rice. I am a vegetable fan, so it is easier for me, but the  problem is, most Americans  eat so little in the way of veggies!. Salad and veggies and fruit should be our emphasis. And I bought fun books, years ago, on interesting things to do with veggies, and it has become a way of life.

So, try to move your diet a little towards this, as a goal, and you will really feel the difference! Your whole system will operate better, you will sleep better, you’ll experience less bone loss, and the most noticeably, your energy level will really improve!

There is a nice site with more info on the alkaline diet- check out alkaline diet, http://www.alkalinediet.org.

Now go have a huge salad or some veggie soup ! 
